Gyeonghuigung: The Elegance and Tragedy of the Western Palace
Apr 10, 2026 · artive
Once called the western palace of Joseon. Sungjeongjeon, the main gate, and vanished halls—another story of the royal house amid loss and memory.

1. Introduction: Memory of a vanished palace
Gyeonghuigung may be Seoul’s saddest palace in terms of survival. Once a major royal seat, almost everything is gone—a few buildings and foundations remain.
Founded in 1593 (Seonjo 26), it was called Seogung (西宮)—a second royal residence at times as politically important as the main palace.
On the western side of Hanyang, at the foot of Inwangsan, it matched the nickname “western gate palace.” Today high-rises and roads surround it; old maps help imagine it as a second capital within the capital for ritual and retreat.
2. Spatial layout: Faded glory
The compound was once large; colonial rule and modernization demolished most of it. Only a fraction survives.
2.1. Sungjeongjeon (崇政殿): The center
Sungjeongjeon was the throne hall—where the king received officials, comparable to Geunjeongjeon or Injeongjeon elsewhere but smaller and more intimate.
When only Sungjeongjeon remains, imagine the woldae and empty sites of lost halls—markers and signs ask where memory ends and reconstruction begins.
Docent tip: Study the carpentry and detail—classic Joseon craftsmanship.
2.2. Jeongmun (正門): Main gate
The formal entrance where the king passed—dignity in compact scale; look at the plaque—royal calligraphy as symbol of authority.
2.3. Lost buildings
- Jagyeongjeon: Hall for the king’s mother
- Hamnyeongjeon: Queen’s quarters
- Gyeonghuigung gardens
All gone or moved.
3. History: Glory to erasure
3.1. Foundation to late Joseon (1593–1910)
Built by King Seonjo; King Yeongjo especially favored it—politics and patronage of culture flourished here—a cultural hub of the age.
3.2. Colonial demolition (1910–1945)
Mass demolition in the 1910s; some halls were relocated, others erased.
Historical meaning: Destruction of Joseon heritage was part of denying Korean legitimacy.
3.3. Modern restoration (1945–present)
Partial restoration cannot replace what was lost. Sungjeongjeon, Jeongmun, and a few structures stand on a mostly empty site.
4. Architecture: Elegance and symbolism
Fine ornament on columns, tiles, and interiors. Timber halls exemplify Joseon design. Layout expressed royal authority—height of Sungjeongjeon, dignity of the gate.
5. Seasons
Spring (Mar–May): Fresh green; quieter than larger palaces.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Shade around Sungjeongjeon.
Autumn (Sep–Nov): Color and leaves on the plaza.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Snow and silence.
