The history of Namsan Park—how a central Seoul hill became wasteland and rose again as one of the city’s defining green spaces.

1. Introduction: From mountain to park
Namsan Park is a park at the heart of Seoul. Its story is one of recovery from ruin—from devastated ground back to public green.
It reflects modern Seoul’s history and is one of the clearest expressions of urban transformation.
2. History of Namsan
2.1. Joseon-era Namsan
In the Joseon period Namsan was a major hill for the capital, dotted with temples and pavilions.
It marked the southern edge of the city in the imagination of Hanyang.
2.2. Under Japanese rule
During the colonial period the hill took on Japanese forms—shrines and Japanese-style structures appeared.
Many older Korean temples and pavilions were lost.
2.3. After liberation
After 1945 the hill was in a ruined state. Buildings had disappeared and the slopes were degraded.

From the 1970s Namsan was gradually restored as parkland. Namsan Park became one of Seoul’s essential greens.
